The first humans to live in what is now Redondo Beach were Native American tribes who hunted and gathered resources near present-day Huntington Avenue and Third Street. In 1849, Spanish explorers discovered land that would eventually become Orange County and named it Rancho Cucamonga because of a grove of trees they saw there. This location was perfect for farming because it had ample rainfall and mild temperatures all year round. The first white people arrived in 1851 when Jens Jensen set up a trading post at Point Conception Bayou on his rancho Santa Margarita y Buena Vista de la Paloma y San Miguel de Allende de las Flores (now part of Seal Beach). In 1857, Don Pedro Menéndez bought part of Rancho Cucamonga from José Vasquez for $10 per acre ($1/km²). Menéndez name their new town San Pedro del Rey after his patron saint - Pedro's Sword (later renamed as Cathedral Park). By 1860, over 100 families had moved to Redondo beach from various parts of southern California to take advantage of the good water conditions here. Over time more businesses came into operation such as First National Bank which opened in 1865; Lighthouse Service which began operating lighthouse lights here in 1872; an ice rink built by entrepreneur John Daly called "Daly's Ice Palace" open until 1906;the first movie theater opened here – The Regent Theatre – with a capacity of 934 people on November 25th, 1896 under license from Leland Stanford Jr.;and finally Lifeboat Company started operations outfitting ships with lifeboats on December 1st 1888 outfitted by local contractor Jens Jensen himself
