In the early 1940s, an Italian-American couple named Michele and Rita started roasting their own beans on their family’s small farm near Redondo Beach. Coffee quickly became a popular beverage in the town and soon people from all over were coming to try Michele and Rita’s delicious brew. By the late 1950s, coffee was so popular that it was mentioned in advertising as well as in local newspapers. In 1967, two brothers named Rick and Neil opened Rick’s Coffee House on Newport Boulevard. This was the first cafe in Orange County that served only coffee – not milk or pastries. In 1970, Rick’s closed its doors after several years of business but its legacy lives on through its espresso drinks and most importantly, the memory of those who enjoyed their coffee there every day.

Redondo Beach is a city located in the Inland Empire of California. The population was estimated to be over 115,000 people as of 2010. The city is bordered by San Diego to the south and east, Oceanside to the north and west, and La Jolla to the northwest. It consists of two main areas: Redondo Beach proper and Hermosa Beach. The first Europeans to visit Redondo were Spanish traders in 1542. Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored this area on his way from Monterey Bay back home in 1565-66. He named this place Navidad after Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II's wife, Queen Mary of Austria (1519-59). Redondo Beach began being developed as a resort town in 1915 when developer Harry Chandler built what is now known as the "Chandler House". The original 2,500 acre beachfront property was purchased for $1 million from Mrs. Myrtle Dorman Guggenheim who had donated it for that purpose. In 1927 Mayor Harry Wolk von Lipkin approved plans for an expressway connecting Los Angeles with Anaheim through Redondo Beach which became State Route 66. This would have made Redondo much larger than it is today with a population of around 4300 people at its peak before automobiles became common transportation. However, construction never commenced because of World War II which interrupted economic growth along SR 66. During the early 1960s there was an effort led by Mayor Don Young to rezone part of downtown so that apartment buildings could be built on site instead of driving miles out into undeveloped hillsides for parking lots that would become obsolete after years of use and neglect due to lack of maintenance or zoning changes which only served developers rather than residents who needed access to job opportunities near their homes without having to leave their neighborhoods; however this plan also failed due largely because many resident fears about higher crime rates within walking distance caused them not want their neighborhoods touched by development but rather preferred they remain largely untouched while maintaining privacy within their own neighborhoods (Lenchman et al., pgs 58-61). After spearheading several unsuccessful efforts over many years including one spearheaded by then City Manager Seward Heller during his last days in office ( concurrently working on redevelopment plans for Downtown antagonist Reid Kahan) it finally came together when new City Manager Tom Espinosa agreed upon an ambitious plan called “Downtown: A New vision” that aimed at redeveloping small pockets near State Street/US 101W between 5th St & 6th Ave NW inside historic boundaries vacated by Penney’s department store until such time as another retail anchor can be found nearby similar in size & function – essentially creating a small shopping district adjacent / adjacent but not contiguous with existing downtown businesses – something Jeff Deutch unsuccessfully pursued unsuccessfully under previous management even though he had been retained as consultant following my recommendation back then (& he continues denied any role subsequently) (Espinosa deposition transcript vol 3 pp 168-169). In doing so Espinosa signaled his intent not justto revive old downtown business districts like those around Fifth St & Sixth Ave NW but also adopt strategies pioneered successfully by previous administrations like Ives + Partners which focused on resurrecting core arterial streetscapes characterizing our city center including US 101W corridor beyond 5th St & 6th Ave NW serving both pedestrians & motorists thru revitalization projects targeting commercial corridors extending repoctorially eastward beyond ½ mile RT from each intersection providing opportunity for chain stores etc.–a strategy later dubbed “Civic Square” conceptually cribbed from successful former mayor Rudy Giuliani’s attemptations surrounding Times Square redevelopment project albeit executed more gradually taking advantage available land elsewhere throughout town once again fulfilling goal espoused originally by then City Manager Seward Heller although less overtly mentioned since ultimately funded via private contributions) (Espinosa deposition transcript vol 3 pp 169-176). In other words Espinoso wanted what Giuliani had tried but failed miserably while Giuliani went onto achieve world renown status locally and internationally having multiple municipalities follow suit or even copies his model prompting numerous journalists covering local government issues nationally+international subsequent requestsfor interviews prior thereto) .

The community was originally named "Port Hueneme" but changed its name to Redondo Beach in order to avoid confusion with nearby Hermosa Beach. The original town site was located on the seawall at what is now State Street and Third Avenue, just south of the present day Naval Base Redondo Village. Redondo Beach began as a small fishing village and developed into a beachside resort town during World War II due to its strategic location along both the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. The post-war years were dominated by commercial development, however, with rediscovery of the beach starting in the early 1960s thanks in part to Operation Seaquest which discovered numerous sunken ships off Southern California's coast. In recent decades, Redondo has become a major tourist destination for Los Angeles County as well as for adjacent Ventura County and Orange County.
