In 1905, the City of Redondo Beach was founded when a group of businessmen pooled their money to buy land north of Hermosa Boulevard for $25 per acre. One year later, they named the area "Redondo" after one of their number had seen red sandbanks near Seal Rock during a storm. A post office called Redondo Beach was established in 1892 and remained open until 1907. The first mayor of Redondo Beach was Fenton Bogue with his first term starting on October 2nd, 1908. He served two terms before being succeeded by Wm Halsey Poston who held the position from 1912 to 1916 then Harry Ahern from 1916 to 1923; both men held office for three terms total before being replaced by George Pacheco effective January 1st 1924 who also served three terms before retiring effective May 15th 1928 The early 20th century saw significant growth as immigration increased and jobs opened up across Southern California due to various oil discoveries that began happening throughout that decade such as those made at Encino and Northridge inland along Interstate 5 (the so-called "Rancho Seco" oilfields). By 1930, there were over 100 businesses operating in town with 4500 residents living within 10 blocks of each other During World War II many civilians moved into towns located adjacent to military bases (such as Seal Rock) because they were needed nearby for work or service while some soldiers returned home after serving their country . This drew attention away from town which slowly lost its population until it peaked at around 6000 residents during the late 1940s when suburbanization began moving families out into central Los Angeles County
