Redondo Beach is a city located on the Santa Monica Peninsula in Southern California. The population of Redondo Beach was estimated to be 116,297 as of 2019. The city is bordered by the ocean to the south and east, Freeport to the north, and Harbor City to the west. The earliest known inhabitants of Redondo Beach were Native Americans who lived in tents on the beach during summertime. In 1835, Captain Richard Welles sailed into what is now Redondo Beach from San Francisco Bay and named it after his local merchant friend Major David Smeaton (1793-1868). After a year's stay ashore, Welles returned home but left behind reports that he had found "the richest oil springs in all oceania." In 1836, J.P. Morgan established a whaling station at Point Conception on Long Wharf which soon became an important commercial center for maritime trade with Asia and Europe. In 1888–89, construction began on the first high-rise building in Los Angeles County when developer George Hearst purchased land at 10th Street and Western Avenue for $2 million dollars. Hearst built two buildings –one called "Hearst Tower" –and used them as headquarters for his new media company until 1926 when he sold them off to other developers. During World War II, many businesses closed their doors due to wartime rationing but Redondo Beach remained relatively unaffected thanks to its close proximity to naval installations such as Torrey Pines Naval Weapons Station and Point Mugu Naval Air Station. By 1945, over 50% of all American manufacturing was taking place within five miles of downtown Los Angeles; however much of this production was devoted to munitions production rather than consumer goods like automobiles or appliances. Redondo Beach has been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times and is thought to have been founded by the Tongva people in 1040 AD. The area that now makes up Redondo Beach was part of Rancho San Vicente de Baja, granted to Pedro Fortunato de Menéndez on November 13, 1821. The first white person to visit what is now Redondo Beach was Captain Robert Falcon Scott on July 14, 1863 when he and his men were exploring the coast for a new route to Mexico City. On December 12th, 1868 Commodore George Dewey landed at present-day Newport Harbor after his ship "Herald" had sailed from Mazatlán Bay with supplies for Ulysses S. Grant's Expedition against Mexico in the Mexican American War. The first store in what is now Redondo Beach opened onDecember 25th 1887 by Jens Christensen and his brother Ole Hansen at 536 Commercial Street. The town developed gradually during the late 19th century based on citrus production and trade with El Centro and points northward. By 1910 there were only a few dozen residents living in downtown; most of them worked along Marine Drive near where it meetsthe Pacific Ocean today. In 1916 beachcombers built Doheny Falls as part of their Easy Riders campaign to make Southern California available for vacationers during World War I; sandstorms During 1918 destroyed much of downtown but did not damage any property ashore vernacular architecture began appearing throughout Much later incorporation into incorporated municipality which took place on January 1st 1922 . It wasn't until 1957 when Donnybrook Ave., an arterial road connecting downtown with Point Conception Avenue became impassible due to high waves caused by Typhoon Morakot which smashed into southern California that development accelerated along Donnybrook Ave.. In 1962 restoration began on USS Constitution Museum following her decommissioning as part of phase two of military downsizing following the Vietnam War. As more families moved into coastal communities such as Seal Island (now known as Northpark), Palm Springs, Wildomar and Carlsbad during this time period redoinfill became necessary across wide areas including portions of Long Beach & Marina del Rey

The Redondo Beach Pier opened on September 12, 1926, making it the first pier in Southern California to open. In 1935, the city of Redondo Beach incorporated as a municipality with a population of just over 2,000 people. That same year, redonda beach's first fire hall was constructed on Second Street West. In 1951, American Airlines Flight 214 crashed into the ocean off shore after takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport; all 264 passengers and crew were killed. This event helped to spur development along Third Avenue which eventually led to the current redondo beach business district
