The Redwood City Air Force Base is home to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and its fighter squadrons, which include the 308th Fighter Squadron. The base was founded as an airbase in 1941 by the United States Army's First Infantry Division and later became part of the United States Air Forces in Europe. In 1951, NORAD moved from RAF Bentwaters to Redwood City after a decision by U.S. Secretary of Defense James Forrestal that California would be the "centre of activity" for NATO's Western Hemisphere operations. The 308th Fighter Squadron arrived at Redwood City on 1 May 1951 from Chanute AFB, Kansas under Ninth Air Force command and was redesignated as the 308th Fighter-Bomber Wing on 15 October 1952. On 6 December 1954, USAF activated Andersen AFB, Guam as a subordinate unit of NORAD with headquarters being located at Andersen AFB until it was transferred to USAC in 1958 when all commands were united within NORAD under Headquarters USAF. Since its inception, Redwood City has been involved in many military engagements including two world wars; Operation Overlord (1944-1945), which led up to World War II; Desert Storm (1991), during which RFK Stadium was used as a temporary airbase; Operation Neptune's Spear (1995), during whichshock waves rocked Northern California following 9/11 attacks; Operation Provide Comfort (2006), duringwhich ;Redwoods could be seen flying over Baghdad following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait;Operation Noble Eagle (2011),during which numerous Boeing 747s were delivered to NASA’s Ames Research Center near Moffett Field for research into advanced aircraft design; and Operation Neptune’s Spear again in 2015 involving multiple flights over Afghanistan as part of America’s effort against ISIL militants. In addition to these military engagements, various community events have been held at Redwood City AFB such as 5K races and birthday parties for servicemen and women stationed here or local high school students who are guests of AF members stationed at other bases around the nation during deployments or travel periods such as Christmas time or 4 July Memorial Day Parade attended by family members or friends who serve our country abroad. Today there are more than 175 active duty service personnel assigned to Redwood City AFB with support from 350 civilian employees who provide administrative support for both units while also conducting research and development activities across many branches of defense including aerospace engineering, science fiction writing and technology development along with missile operations. At any given time there may be several dozen retirees from our active duty forces stationed here while additional civilians work remotely providing vital functions needed for our mission statement - defending freedom worldwide through mediums such as aviation! In recent years we have seen new technologies being developed right here at RedwoodCityAirForceBaseand this has had a significant impact on how we operate todayboth militarilyas wellas technologically! For examplein 2016 we received notification that SpaceX had successfully landed their Falcon 9 rocket first stage onto an earthly launch pad making them one step closer towards reusable rockets!) We also saw demonstrationsof autonomous vehicle technologybeing demonstratedby WaymoanLabsand Uber Technologies LLCalongwith several large manufacturing contracts being awarded regionallyincluding oneforthe developmentofa new lithium ion battery!! And lastlyinNovember2018our engineers successfully test firedthe first successfullong range drone mission utilizing DJI Phantom4 drones! In the early 1900s, the United States Air Force was founded as an arm of the Department of War. The first directive from Secretary of War Newton Baker called for the establishment of a air service “to furnish munitions to our warring allies.” In response to this call, Congress passed legislation on March 21, 1913 establishing an air force with a staff of two officers and fifteen enlisted men. On July 1, 1918, General Hugh Johnson became Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force and ordered all military branches in America to contribute their strength to support aviation. This order resulted in the creation of American Aviation Corporation (AAC) which was charged with developing and producing airplanes for use by both military and commercial organizations. The First World War demonstrated just how important aviation had become in warfare and led to even more legislation being passed that established AAC as a national organization with its own board and policies governing its operations. After the war, AAC developed new airplane models which were used by both military forces and civilian airlines all over America. In 1927, AAC merged with Boeing Aircraft Company to form The Boeing Company which is still a major player in aerospace engineering today.
