In 1836, John Cranch founded Rancho Rinconada del Norte here in what is now Redwood City proper. Over the next century, many other businesses and residents moved into Redwood City from various parts of Marin County including Sausalito and Petaluma. The city boundaries have changed few times since its incorporation as a town on April 4, 1889 by Jens Jensen (1854-1941), one of the early developers of Marin County; his wife Anna Sofia Sveinbjerg (1860-1925) had been born in Copenhagen, Denmark). After World War II Redwood City became an increasingly residential center with a large number of factories that closed or were converted to apartments over the years; however it still preserves some historic buildings such as Waterman’s Wharf which has served as both a commercial and residential district since 1851 Redwood City has two public schools: Redwood High School and Green Diamond Middle School The city also has three private schools: Stinson Beach High School (for students who attend neighboring Stinson Beach District Schools), Livermore Valley College Preparatory School for students who attend Livermore Valley College or nearby Livermore National Laboratory high school districts; and ScienceWorld Charter Academy for children aged 3-12 who live within walking distance of either ScienceWorld Museum or their local science museum
