The Redwood City Coast Guard Auxiliary has been providing service to the community since 1923. The Auxiliary was formed from a merger of two local organizations, the Redwood City Chamber of Commerce and the Redwood City Volunteer Fire Department. During World War II, lighthouse personnel were drafted into the Coast Guard Auxiliary to help with coastal defense. After the war, Coast Guard Auxiliary members helped establish various social clubs in Redwood City including the Yacht Club, Ladies United fraternal society (LUFS), and Rotary club. In 1951, the Auxiliary joined forces with San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency to form California Transit Authority (CTA). In 1966, CTA merged with Santa Clara County’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission to become Santa Clara County Transportation District (STCD). The STCD merged with San Francisco’s Muni Railway Company in 1988 to create Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). BART continues to provide transportation for locals and tourists today. Today, Coast Guard Auxiliary members continue their vital role in supporting our community by providing auxiliary services such as road maintenance and security patrols on behalf of local businesses and residents. In addition, they contribute their time through charitable donations which benefit many different causes throughout our city.
