Redwood City is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 68,471 at the 2010 census. It was founded on December 12, 1869 by John R. Redwood City was founded on December 15, 1859, by George and Deborah Redwood. The first store was located on Second Street in what is now the heart of the city. In 1860, the Redwoods purchased land east of First Street and built a mill to process wood. That same year, they also founded the Redwood City Water Works which later became part of Municipal Services Agency. In 1872, the Redwoods sold their mill and property to Henry Ford for $10,000. Ford began manufacturing cars in Greenfield Township in 1916. The company moved its headquarters from Greenfield to Dearborn Avenue in 1922. Dearborn Avenue was renamed Michigan Avenue in 1960 after General Motors Corporation (GM). The city's population decreased from over 60,000 residents in 1950 to 37,500 residents by 1970; however it has since increased back up to around 50,000 residents as of 2015 .
