At this point in its history, Redwood City had already become an important center for technology development due to its location at the epicenter of several major railroad lines and its proximity to both San Francisco Bay Area counties and Solano County. By 1870, De La Fuente had also attracted significant numbers of European immigrants who were coming specificallyto work on his new rancho (farm). Reddwood City was founded on February 17, 1868 by J. P. Morgan and James Buchanan Polk as a small farming community in the now-defunct Central Valley of California. However, during World War II, Reddwood City was one of the largest military towns in California because it housed large numbers of military personnel stationed at nearby Air Force Base Redding.
