One such event happened on October 10th, 1951 when members of “The Black Knights” unit stopped by town on their way back from an amphibious operation off Okinawa with supplies and ammunition (and a few souvenirs). They were met by Mayor Harry Pappas who presented each soldier with a gift bag filled with items including clothes, food and gasoline cans. This was only the beginning of local support for active duty troops – within months we had also become home to The San Francisco Bay Area Mini-War Museum which focused exclusively on WWII American military personnel and their equipment (and sometimes civilian hostages) captured by Japan during the conflict). Throughout these years there have been countless donations made both locally and nationally to support servicemen and women preparing for war or serving abroad – often these donations go unacknowledged until after combat has ended and memories of that time have faded away. For example, just prior to departing for Afghanistan in 2001 our Post Office moved from its old location at 815 Market St towards Fort Point Naval Air Station where it currently stands (now part of Navy Beach). During construction workers digging through old mail found numerous postcards sent home by US Soldiers stationed overseas during World War II/1949/1950 etc… Some even went as far as being addressed directly to Mayor Pappas! A portion of this mail still remains at Ft Point Naval Air Station today waiting to be processed into PostgreSQL so that we can create online archives thereof! It is the most populous city in Marin County and the second largest city on the Peninsula after San Francisco. The newest part of Redwood City is located in an area now known as East Palo Alto. The first Europeans to visit what is now Redwood City were Spanish explorers who set out from Monterey Bay on May 10, 1769, during the exploration of Alta California by Juan Bautista de Anza. Redwood City was founded in 1869 by John Cranch and his wife, Anna Maria Pacheco Carrion. They named their new town for General Samuel Adams's redwoods which they saw growing near them on property they had bought from Captain James Cook while he was exploring Santa Cruz Island. Drury Lane built a store and warehouse here in 1870-71 and opened it as the first public house in Redwood City. A post office called Redwood City was established in 1872; it remained open until 1907. In 1906, local citizens voted to change its name to RedWOOD CITY INC., effective November 1, 1906. At this time much of Northern Marin County lay beyond our present boundaries including portions of Petaluma and Daly City - so we did not get along with those folks very well! However over time our relationship has improved considerably (perhaps because we are all Humboldtians?) In any case when I took my final oral history test back at UC Berkeley years ago there wasn't a single person aboard my bus that could remember me from high school or even before that! So let's just say we've sort of grown up together since then!
