Captain Brougham took possession of some 640 acres (2 km2) around present-day Redwood City for British soldiers stationed at Stockton during their occupation of California following Mexican independence from Spain. On February 12, 1854, Governor Hugo Black issued his gubernatorial proclamation establishing a town site within Spanish Alameda County called Rancho Vallejo de las Madres (Valley of Mothers). In 1855, General Mariano Diaz ordered Lieutenant Colonel Donald Ewald to take possession of this newly acquired Rancho Vallejo de las Madres and build military barracks thereon. The first post office was established at Rancho Vallejo de las Madres on January 15, 1856; it was named Castroville after José Castro Dirúa y Landa who served as captain general during Mexico's War for Independence (1846-48). In 1865 Aplasia Ortega donated land near Live Oak Avenue in downtown Redwood City to establish a park measuring 350 feet wide by 200 feet deep with a grandstand capable seating for 2,000 people known as Don Anselmo Park; this donation remains today as Don Anselmo Park State Monument located south off Live Oak Avenue across from Don Pedro's restaurant
