The first unit to be organized was Company A of the 9th Infantry Regiment from San Francisco. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War and later fought in the American Civil War as part of both Union and Confederate armies. Redwood City, California is a city located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 158,815 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Silicon Valley and one of the most-populous cities in all of Northern California. With an area of 14 square miles (37 km²), Redwood City has a population density of 2,788 people per square mile (1,098/km²). Redwood City was founded on November 17, 1868 by John D. Rockefeller and his partners James Fenton and David Dudley Pearce as a farming community known as "Rockefeller's Ranch." In 1870 Rockefeller donated land to the town for its first post office and school district; he also built two churches there. The original town name was changed to Redwood City on May 25th of that year in order to avoid confusion with nearby Daly City. Redwood City grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near San Francisco Bay and its easy access to transportation options including ferries from Sausalito and Tiburon Ferry Terminal. The influx of immigrants - primarily Swiss Americans - who came to work on new railroads led to rapid growth in the city during this time period. In 1909 Redwood City became one of twenty-five settlements in Alameda County designated as part of the newly created East Bay Municipal District; it remained within that district until 1995 when it became part of San Jose. During World War II, Redwood City played an important role as both a munitions manufacturing center for Santa Clara County and as a destination for American troops stationed throughout Northern California due to its proximity to Naval Air Station Fairfield which produced planes used by both Allied forces and Japan during World War II. After the war ended, many factories closed down while others transformed into new businesses such as Hewlett-Packard which opened up shop here in 1974 before moving out again two years later. Additionally, many young computer entrepreneurs moved here during this time period such as Steve Jobs who started Apple Incorporated here in 1976 before later moving back out westward after leaving Apple at some point between 1978-1981. During this same era other major tech companies like Intel also opened up shop here including their first facility outside Palo Alto which would soon become home to AMD International Incorporated prior to their current headquarters being built there downtown overlooking Telegraph Hill Park today! Finally, following several rounds of economic recession over ensuing decades most businesses have resumed their former growth rates but with slightly higher rents than they were when they first opened!
