In 1865, it was incorporated as a town under the name Redwood City – first used as an allusion to its natural woody growths which were redwoods – although this name remained until 1886 when it changed to its current one because of objections from other municipalities within Marin County that had been named for trees such as Tamalpais (the largest tree in Northern California), Yerba Buena (a salt water creek near Sausalito) and Belvedere (named for a hill near Martinez). The downtown area developed rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location close to major transportation hubs including BART/Nesta station and Caltrain/El Sobrante station on Telegraph Avenue east of Redwood Boulevard
Redwood City is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 56,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Mateo County. The city is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and borders Pacifica to the north, Menlo Park to the east, Palo Alto to the south and east of Redwood City is its rural area. The first town in what is now Redwood City was established in 1847 by American soldiers under General David Hunter as Fort Point Presidio. The name came from their use of redwoods for building materials. In 1868, when Redwood City became an incorporated town it included both Fort Point Presidio and all of today's downtown including much of East Palo Alto which was annexed by Redwood City in 1937. In 1870, local entrepreneur John Drysdale founded Drysdale's Drug Store and began selling opium from his store on First Street between North Avenue and Middle Way before finally closing it down in 1906 due to prohibition laws that had been passed since 1829. A key figure in early days of Redwood City was Captain Edward Eames who served as sheriff from 1850-1851 and also played a significant role in helping organize what would become known as "the Town". By 1860 there were over 100 residents living within the present boundaries of Redwood City
