But the origins of coffee are much more complex than that. The first mention of coffee in written form is from ancient Egyptians, who mentioned roasted beans as an offering to the gods. In China, coffee was used as medicinal tea for thousands of years before it was introduced to Europe. Coffee wasn't actually grown in Redwood City until the early 1800s, when Italian immigrants began bringing their seedlings with them when they came to California. The first commercial crop was planted in 1853 and became known as "Redwood City Coffee." At its peak, Redwood City's coffee industry employed around 100 workers! But even though Redwood City's coffee industry had a significant impact on Californian culture and society, it couldn't keep up with the demand for the product. By 1900, only 10 percent of all beans grown in California were exported! And by World War II, only 5 percent of all beans still originated from Redwood City! But despite these challenges, Coffee continues to thrive today - thanks in large part to our community's love for good quality Arabica beans! Redwood City is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 26,815 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Mateo County and the most populous city east of the Pacific Ocean. The name Redwood City comes from redwoods, which are found thereabouts. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Redwood City was made by Junipero Serra and his men on May 25, 1846, during their exploratory journey from Monterey Bay to Sonoma Valley. They built a small cabin nearpresent-day downtown Redwood City on Isabella Island. The island had been used as an animal pen by Native Americans for many years before Europeans arrived. In 1851, Jedediah Smith founded the town of Eureka on Point Reyes Peninsula north of modern-day Eureka and named it after his father's home state of Vermont (Erie). On November 15, 1851—the day before California became a state—Smith wrote to Ulysses S. Grant that he had founded "a new town called Eureka" in reaction to reports of gold reserves around San Francisco Bay. Grants saw no need for another post office within easy reach of Sacramento so he granted Smith's request and referred interested parties to Postmaster John Aitken at Stockton. On May 25, 1846–four days after Gold Rush fever swept through Northern California–SERRA'S men set ashore on Isabella Island with three cannons from their ship "Isabel" following soon afterwards with supplies and equipment for further exploration including artillery pieces needed for Selma Gulch--the first recorded use of firearms in California history; however no gold were found until 1850 when prospectors discovered large quantities at Folsom Creek just south of today's Petaluma Landing area." The first store opened in downtown Redwood City on October 17th 1865 by Wm Halleck & Co., Merchants who later became known as Halleck & Sons grocery store chain which still exists today
