In 1872-1873 an artillery battery (the 2nd Battalion) was organized at Reedley and moved to Kern County to assist in suppressing Mexican Indian raids. This battery operated from various locations until it relocated to its present location at Reedley in 1875 where it remained until 1903 when it was disbanded due to budgetary cuts within the army. From 1903 through 1907 an ammunition depot (the 3rd Ammunition Depot) existed at Reedley which functioned as a storage depot for ordnance supplies used by both cavalry units stationed here and artillery batteries operating from other locations throughout California. In 1908 an infantry battalion (the 4th Infantry Battalion) moved from San Francisco to Reedley because of growing population density in central Kern County and problems with space available at existing armories. The battalion arrived too late for World War I but saw action against Japanese forces near Bakersfield on November 25th 1918 after being alerted by aerial reconnaissance about their presence near that city. Afterward the battalion returned home garrisoning various local installations before disbanding on October 30th 1919 after serving only three years during which time it lost over 100 men killed or wounded including 11 officers/cadets).
