It is part of the San Bernardino metropolitan area and is considered to be one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Northern California. The first coffeehouses opened in Reedley in 1892 and were run by African Americans. By 1925, all but two of the city's fifty-six businesses had coffee shops. The first beans were roasted in a small room in the house that Nieto and Ramos used as their office. From there, they started selling their coffee all over southern California. In 1951, Don Julio moved its headquarters from Los Angeles to Reedley so that it could better support its growing population. Today, Don Julio Coffee is one of the most popular coffees in California.

Reedley, California is a small town in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 2,846 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Siskiyou and Modoc counties. Reedley first became an organized town in 1859 when it was part of Butte County. In 1866, it became a separate city and has since grown to become one of the most populous communities in Siskiyou County. The first European settlement in what is now Reedley dates back to1849 when James Gunn Cadwallader settled a claim along the banks of Clearwater River. He named his new land "Reedley" after John Reed from Boston who had come overland fromasseron in 1828 with his family and homesteaded near where Sacramento now stands. The first post office was established at "Reedley" on July 16, 1850, by WmSpencer and Fanny Bicknor as part of a larger effort to establish mail routes between Stockton and Sacramento through central California. At that time there were only two ways to get mail: by stagecoach or wagon train across mountain ranges into Oregon or Nevada Territory (then called Alta California). Mail arrived at this location by way of riverboat which crossed the headwaters of the Sacramento River below present-day Reedley before continuing upstream to San Francisco Bay. In 1861, Reedley became one of eight towns within Butte County when Butte split off from Alta Californias restive Central Valley region subject to local control by both CPUA (the Central Valley Railroad) and Gold Rush pioneers seeking access to rich goldfields beyond contemporary Yuba City and Shasta Lake. With its own courthouse and jail (both built in 1865), police force and county seat status quo antebellum Reedley enjoyed relative peace until November 1862 when Confederate soldiers under General Robert E Grant occupied buttermilk Ranch east of town during their ill-fated attempt to drive returning veteran Ulysses S Grant out of western California for political reasons unrelated to military strategy; later known as Battle Of The Little Big Horn or simply The Outlaw Campaign (). On December 12th & 13th 1863 three Union infantry battalions led by Colonel Thaddeus Stevens fought an inconclusive encounter against Confederate cavalry near present-day downtown Reedley while also supporting efforts by volunteer San Francisco militia forces including Captain Hiram Cook's Company C (later Companies A & B) against an abortive statewide secession attempt organizedby Captain George Hearn among other officers under Majestic Commanders Lew Wallace (& Captains David Jones & John Purdy) that resulted in no Australian casualties despite reports otherwise circulated throughout Northern Santa Clara county claiming up 10%+ troop losses with rebels losing anywhere from 3 - 25 men killed & wounded plus vast herds totaly destroyed (>4000 head). As result many residents never returned home following conflicts unresolved more than 60 years later As early as 1855 Jedediah Smith had patented some 500 acres northward extending into what is now Modoc County on Saddleback Creek just south of today’s Adelanto Street., naming it “Evelyn Ranch” about fifteen miles northeast then northwestward along Donner Pass Road thence due east 1/2 mile past Black Diamond Minesactually located southeast corner today’s Red Bluff Road opposite Mount Shasta National Monument comprising Lower White Cloud area surveyed Feb 1889 . By 1860 he owned another 640 acres adjoining Evelyn Ranch grantee making him proprietor-in-possession thereof for life or until sold... On May 6th 1860 Manuel Chavez purchased 535 acres adjacent rancho Negro de Fuca grants patent No Vesta 8vo 4to 3 pages describing mineral rights sdgranted Mar 26 th 1860 To His Brother Isaac Chavez For $1 per acre payable within 7 years without interest Allowed dwenty bullocks grazing on sdgrant Not Allowed Horses Herds any more This property passed thru hands several times chiseled away over many years changing hands again Finally acquired thru donation From Mrs Jane Potter US Dept OF Interior By special Request Of Gov Jerry BrownNovember 1969 After death throe wife transferred interest Dec 1971 To State Historical Museum In Fresno CA Statesattorney Generals Records show Mexican Land grantees applied for title Dec 21st1861 However application was not received because granted Mar 26 th 1860...During this period Chivas leased 5000 acres around modern day Modesto northeastof Mendocino from Ewert Dodge dated Nov 10 th 1871 For 15 yrs term begining Aug 1870...Dodge sold land parcels beginning Oct 1870 ending Apr 1880 including most recent parcel starting Jan 1886 which included original Evelyn rancheria site now used as village center
Reedley was founded on October 15, 1859 by Levi Reed and his partner, Augustus Baldwin. The town was named for the Reed family, who had come to the area in 1849. The first store opened in 1861. In 1865, the town became a part of California.
