Reedley is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Bakersfield-Delano, CA micropolitan area. Reedley has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and was first organized as a mission on May 10th of 1849 by Father Francisco de la Luz. In 1886, Reedley became a city when it was incorporated under the name of Bakersfield. In 1978, Reedley annexed part of the towns of Big Bear and Little Bear to form a new city government with its own police department and fire department. Today, Reedley is home to many businesses such as banks and restaurants; it also contains several dozen homes that have been rented out to people who work in Bakersfield or surrounding areas. Reedley’s namesake is John Reed who came from New Hampshire in 1795 and homesteaded land near what is now the downtown area of town in 1828. After some time working his land this man donated all but 5 acres (20,000 m2) of his holdings to the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1835 which then named him “President” for life after naming their summer campground after him (it still bears that name). In 1853-1854 there were three fires which destroyed most of what remains today of downtown Reedley except for one building on Main Street where an insurance company had its office until 1979 when it moved out because local politics changed so quickly that they could not keep up with changes! On July 4th 1861 during the American Civil War Confederate General Braxton Bragg burned down half the town because he thought that Union soldiers were coming! The next year an earthquake hit which destroyed most buildings including residences; however according to oral history only one building on Main Street caught alight! In 1922-1923 construction began on what would become called “the great dam” which would provide water for irrigation purposes across much of Kern County while also providing employment for 400 people; however due to bad weather conditions much work stopped and only 50%of project completion took place before being abandoned due economic difficulties brought about by World War II agriculture specialization
