Reedley is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Stockton and 25 miles (40 km) north of Sacramento. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. Reedley was founded in 1872 by George Reed, who named it for his ancestor, Reuben Reed. In 1905, Reedley became part of the City of Stockton. In 1916, Reedley was annexed by the City of Sacramento. The history of Reedley starts with George Reid who settled there in 1872 from Ohio. He named the town after his ancestor Reuben Reed who had also settled there in 1851. The first post office was established at what is now downtown on October 15, 1872. In 1906, when Stockton became an incorporated city and Reedley became a part thereof, they both changed their names to honor their respective ancestors -George Reid becoming Stockton and George Reed becoming Reedley. In 1916, when Sacramento annexed parts of eastern Contra Costa County to form new city boundaries, they merged with parts of East Bay Municipal Utility District #2 which then merged into new Oakland suburb Emeryville before finally merging into San Francisco proper in 1972 as a result of Proposition 12 which created statewide consolidation within government entities across all levels including cities and towns
