It is part of the San Bernardino– Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to sight and explore this area were members of Mission several miles east in what is now Riverside County. Father Francisco Jiménez traveled upriver from San Bernardino in 1769 and charted a course for Reedley along what is now Interstate 15 and Highway 8. On October 25, 1874, when US Cavalry Captain George Custer attacked a posse of Native Americans near present-day Reedley, he encountered three Mexicans who had been sent by President Carlos Mesa to protect the settlers from possible Indian attack.1 The Mexican soldiers killed two American civilians before fleeing into the night; one local man named John Ahern reported seeing them lying dead alongside some horses on an old mission property about five miles northwest of Reedley today.2 In 1892, J.P. Morgan established his rancho (land grant) at what is now Springdale Road and Main Street in Reedley's north side; it included much of today's downtown as well as many outlying tracts that were not irrigated until after World War II because irrigation became available through new technology developed by General Electric Company president David Sarnoff during that time period.— In 1907 J P Morgan founded Eastman Kodak which employed over 100% American labor on its manufacturing plants across America.— In 1912 Standard Oil Company merged with International Harvester Company to form Chevron Corporation.— In 1916 United States Steel Corporation merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to form United Aircraft Corp.}At various points during its history there have been numerous businesses headquartered here including: American Express National Bank (1927-1981), Western Union Telegraph Agency (1929-1990), Standard Oil Coorporation (1931-1966), International Harvester Corp., Chevron Corporation (1982-present).}
