Reedley is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. It was founded in 1864 by Leland Stanford and his wife Calista Reed. The population was 32,846 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Alameda County and the ninth-most populous city in California. The city is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Contra Costa County to the north and east, Berkeley to the south,Oakland to the west and south. The first people to live here were Native Americans who roamed what is now Reedley before coming down from Santa Cruz Mountains about 12 miles (19 km) upstream from today's town site. In 1864, when Leland Stanford Jr.'s father bought Rancho Rinconada Below Market price of 4 acres (1 ha), he named it after Calista Reed's maternal ancestors: Charles Reed of Portsmouth, NH and Deborah Johnstone of Boston. These early settlers built homes made out of adobe or wire brush which they used for storage until they could build more permanent structures such as barns or homes on higher ground some time later; there are still several old adobe buildings remaining in downtown Reedley today dating back to this period. Reedley is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,966 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Reedley was founded on November 20, 1879 by Gideon Welles and his wife Anna May Welles as a sheep ranch on Rancho San Luis Rey (now Reedley Municipal Airport). The original town plat showed a name of "Reedleysburg" but it was changed to Reedley in honor of General James A. Reed who had helped conduct the Mexican-American War and later became Governor of California. The town began as an agricultural community with cattle and wagon trains bringing goods to market in Bakersfield and other nearby towns. By 1925, when the local post office opened its doors for business, farming had been replaced by manufacturing including paper products, automobiles, radios and other appliances. In 1930 construction began on what would become the first commercial building in Reedley - a six-story brick building erected by local electrician Harry Fenton that served as both store and office until it burned down in 1951. One early resident recalled: "It was not long before we realized that this place [Reedley] could do better than just be one small village". In 1954 Mayor John Kapp assigned architect Raymond Hood to design what would become known as the "Modernist Town Hall." Completed two years earlier than planned due to budgetary restrictions stemming from World War II budget cuts, it became one of America's most celebrated examples of postwar architecture. The following year saw the opening of Camp Randall Stadium – then home to USC Trojans football – which led to increased civic activity and development around the stadium site including retail stores, dining establishments and professional offices. The decline of agriculture during the 1970s brought about a decrease in jobs in rural Kern County; however, economic resurgence has seen growth for Reedley over the past decade with new businesses starting up throughout downtown areas such as Strawbridge Place Mall and Old Main Shopping Center which have attracted much attention from residents and tourists alike. In recent years there have also been increasing reports indicating that pharmaceuticals may soon move into or expand their operations into Reedleysville after purchasing land east of town near Interstate 5; thus offering yet another opportunity for redevelopment around this Historic Community located among some of Southern California's most significant entertainment districts
Reedley was founded by the Reed family in 1859. The town became a part of California in 1896. In 1916, Reedley hosted the first statewide fair in California.
