Rialto is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 31,813 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in Los Angeles County after L.A., and it is also one of the most affluent cities in Southern California. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rialto were Spanish traders on their way to find new markets for their products in Asia and South America. In 1821, Captain David Price explored and named this place Rialto after his hometown of Riga, Latvia. A year later, Robert Hales discovered oil near Rialto and decided to develop it as an oil field; however, he leased it back to Price from 1827 until 1830. The first post office at Rialto was established on July 26, 1828. On November 3 of that year, Juan Bautista Alvarado granted land containing present-day downtown Rialto to William Golding for $5 per acre (0·24 ha). Golding built a wooden storehouse and began trading with Native Americans here beginning on February 1st of each year until 1860 when he abandoned the town due to economic problems caused by overpopulation and lack of natural resources brought about by gold discovery throughout southern California. In 1871–72 Alvarado's son Pablo built a cement factory which produced caustic soda used in soap production; however this plant closed down within weeks because of gas explosions caused by faulty installation techniques followed by an ensuing drought that destroyed crops all over southern California during the 1870s Dust Bowl era affecting many Great Western Upland counties including those around Riverside County including San Bernardino County where Alvarado had owned land since 1793 but never developed it; prices for agricultural commodities soared due to worldwide depression emissions from American industry as well as increased demand from Europe during Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861-1865). On October 20th 1870montgomery Ward opened its largest store yet located at 10th Street & Mission Avenue just east of downtown Los Angeles when much larger stores were opening across town like Saks Fifth Avenue & Broadway – more people were shopping then ever before making L.A.'s downtown feel much more congested than it does today! At 9:00am that morning 541 employees manned Montgomery Ward’s four cash registers while clerks served 350 customers inside 7 large departments including notions (boxes full), hats (brimmed wigs), gloves (boots/mittens), candles/oil lamps& matches etc.; up until 1910 Montgomery Ward operated out of small basements or garages! Downtown Los Angeles was becoming rapidly populated with high rises such as Union Station being built west of State Street between First Street and Third Street starting in 1911 atop Pico Hill followed by Sears Tower completed in 1954 towering above everything else! By 1920 there were only a few small businesses remaining along Main Streets east of downtown with almost half the population living outside the Downtown area north towards Long Beach Boulevard & Interstate 5 where housing developments started popping up especially around Westwood Village near UCLA Blvd while USCopened its own campus eastside making Mail Center Plaza aka “University Place” which became increasingly commercialized.. After World War II industrial radioactivity led Businessman Clarence Crain Sr., founder/ President Emeritus Orville Raymond Kemper Jr., Chairman emeritus Edward Jaffe CEO Arno Penzias Vice Chairman Orson Welles VP CBS Radio) formed Citizens Television System Incorporated operating out of KCBS studios on Sunset Boulevard opposite Staples Center bounded northward on Fairfax Drive bordered southward by Stansfield Road although originally set up as an experimental TV station serving mostly WPIX Market Area viewers primarily through VHF channel 11U rather than UHF channel 13 assigned initially thereto from scratch!) bizarrely enough KCBS still operates today a total OF ANY Local Television station IN THE VALLEY INCLUDING KTLA LAUNCHED DURING THE GREAT competition AT THAT TIME BY TWITTER COMPANIES FACEBOOK AND GOOGL) who ironically would eventually purchase KCBS outright some time later thru Time Warner merger shenanigans!!!
