Rialto, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 21,546 at the 2010 census. It is named after Rialto Bridge over the San Joaquin River. The history of Rialto began with Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1821 and ended with its closure by order of Mexican president Vicente Guerrero in 1849. American settlers arrived in what is now Rialto during the 1840s, and by 1850 there were about 100 people living there. In 1857, Jethro McDowell built a sawmill on Donnybrook Creek near present-day downtown Rialto. The town grew rapidly from 1860 to 1870 when it became an incorporated municipality under state law. In 1872, fire destroyed most of the mills and businesses; however, new mills were built and operation continued until 1906 when it was closed due to economic reasons. In 1951, voters approved Proposition 20 which created the City of Rialto as an unincorporated area within Santa Clara County. In 1976, voters passed Proposition 86 which renamed the city “RialTO” in commemoration of its growth as a commercial community since 1986. The current mayor is Robb Stirling (D). The name "RialTO" comes from "rifugio", meaning “watercourse” or “stream” in Italian; this reference may be to Donnybrook Creek which emptied into San Pablo Bay before entering Rialto harbor whereupon it drained into Bolsa creek just south of town limits).
