Rialto is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California. It lies at the junction of Interstate 5 and State Route 101. As of the 2010 census, its population was 17. The name "Rialto" comes from two local rivers: the Rialto River and Turlock Creek. The town was founded by John Sutter on November 12, 1848 as a wagon stop on the Rialto River east of what is now downtown Los Angeles. In 1853, Sutter's daughter Caroline married Henry Morton, who became General Manager of Northern Pacific Railroad in L.A.. In 1861, after Pacific Railroad merged with Southern Railway to form American Railroads, Morton transferred his ownership interest in Northern Pacific Railroad to George Eastman (a co-founder of Kodak). At this time, Kodak had just started production at its new camera plant in Culver City and needed a place to store their equipment while they waited for delivery of new products. Morton renamed Rialto "Eastman's Hollywood" and began developing films there using cottonseed oil instead of whale oil that would have harmed the whales! From then until 1923 when photography became extinct due to development within ubiquitous digital cameras we can thank him for enabling our ability capture moments never before possible. Eastman also donated land for use as a movie set back then called The Downsview Park today's Downtown LA
