Rialto is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California that straddles the border of Kern County and Tulare County. It was founded in 1864 by Jedediah Smith, who named it for his then-wife, Rinaldo. The first post office was established in 1865. The population of Rialto increased rapidly from its original dozen residents to over 200 by 1880. By 1925, with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, Rialto became an important regional center for agricultural production and served as a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad's main line between Sacramento and Los Angeles. Rialto is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of the Inland Empire and sits atop Rialto Creek on the western edge of San Bernardino Mountains. The town was first called Ajo by Spanish settlers in 1821 and then Acapulco in 1825 before landing at what is now Rialto Creek. On April 17, 1848, General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked Rialto Creek defenses with a force of over 100 men, women and children after losing battle with Mexican forces near what is now downtown Rialto. The creek's name means "bridge" in Spanish. After Santa Anna's attack, many people named their new settlements after Governors or military leaders who had participated in that battle: Ajo (1848), Acapulco (1825), Alhambra (1849), Rancho Tejon (1858), and finally San Bernardino County seat of Pico Alto (1868). On November 3rd 1860 two brothers - Samuel Goldsmith and John Sutter - founded the city of Stockton on fertile soil north of where they lived next to Rialto Creek. They named it for Commodore George Washington Stockton who had commanded American forces at this site during the Mexican-American War. In 1871 an act was passed by the state legislature annexing northern San Bernardino County to Los Angeles County as a result of recommendations from commissioners appointed to study annexation which included visiting sites including what is now Rialto; Ajo; Pico Alto; Cathedral City; Northridge; Monrovia; Escondido; Downey and others including future cities such as Burbank, Ontario and Watsonville. The first post office opened in December 1870 under auspices of Mayor Sidney Sayers with Samuel Goldsmith serving as postmaster until his death in 1880s when responsibility switched to John Sutter Jr.. The townsite around today's creek became part of town limits within Los Angeles County on January 1st 1893 following approval by voters there too via referendum! By 1907 there were only 8 residents left living within town limits with most residents moving out into nearby areas as land values rose rapidly around these parts due to easy access to water resources like irrigation canals running through these mountains especially along Coyote Hills Road/State Route 14 between present day Downtown Rialtto/Pueblo Viejo eastward past Amador Valley toward Sepulveda Pass opening onto Interstate 5 just outside today's city limits
