In the early 1800s, law enforcement in Rialto was a small and isolated community. One of the first policemen on the scene was Captain George Fenton. He arrived in 1807 to help settle a dispute between two groups of settlers. From this beginning, police officers in Rialto were primarily responsible for enforcing laws and keeping order within the community. Over time, the role of policeman evolved into one that is today considered important and valuable to our city. In 1919, Mayor Harry Wark designated Rialto as a Police Department Headquarters location. This designation allowed for more efficient operations and better coordination among law enforcement agencies in our community. Rialto, California is a tiny city on the southern coast of California. It straddles the Pacific Ocean and was founded in 1868 by Italian Americans who sailed from Italy to find new opportunities in America. The city is known for its dramatic views of the ocean and its many art galleries, theaters, and restaurants. The town was named after Rialto Strait, which separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Pacific Ocean. The first Europeans to visit Rialto were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew of three ships in 1524. From then until 1868, when it became a town, Rialto functioned as a small trading post on the Pacific Coast. In 1886, however, it became an important port because of its location between Newport Beach on the east side and Santa Monica on the west side of Ventura County. Today, Rialto remains an important cultural center with several museums including one devoted to Italian art called "Museo d'Italia". It also has a large park that includes several swimming pools and a beachfront casino.

In 1852, the American Fur Company founded a fur market in Rialto, California. The company was to continue operating in the area until 1857 when it moved its business to Sacramento. In 1865, the company established an adjacent post at Clifton Springs. In 1876, the post was closed and the buildings sold to a group of investors who developed them into a hotel and summer resort. The original Clifton Springs Hotel still stands today. Rialto is located on Highway 101 between Redding and Auburn cities in Northern California’s Central Valley. It is bordered by Redding on one side and Glenn Ellen on the other. According to Rialto historian Dr. Rick Lightfoot, “Rialto’s fame as a fashionable tourist center can be traced back to its early days as an important stop for travelers on their way from Southern California to Nevada or Oregon’s Willamette Valley…. during this time period large numbers of prospectors made their homes hereabouts….. many of these men were quite successful due in part to their investments in cattle ranching enterprises within easy driving distance of town…." The early years of Rialto were not all successes however; due largely to flooding that occurred multiple times throughout the decades, many businesses failed and infrastructure was never built up properly thereafter which impacted tourism industry heavily over time……………………………………….. Today there are some remaining businesses that contribute significantly towards maintaining historical aspects associated with Rialto such as: The Old Mattress Museum- open daily 9am-5pm; Historic Old Post Office Building– open Thursday through Saturday 9am-4pm; Auctionsheld biweekly at 10am EST; local farmers markets held twice weekly; vernacular architecture tour offered once monthly (March – December); private golf courses available for rental (www.raltogolfclub).
