When the United States Air Force deployed its first team of aerial journalists in 1948, it was a small but important part of America’s newsgathering system. In 1966, the USAF created its own television service to provide live footage from overseas battlefields and international conferences. The United States Air Force has been deploying gift history for more than sixty years. The origins of the USAF's Gift History Program can be traced back to World War I when military commanders needed to commemorate special occasions. At that time, commanders would order gifts for their troops and staff from various suppliers. In 1941, General George Custer gave a custom-made watch to his aide sergeant major, souvenir of their victory at the Battle of Little Big Horn. This event is often cited as the beginning of the USAF's Gift History Program. In 1946, Air Force Headquarters created a Department of Special Investigations (DSI) to investigate gifts sent by member nations during World War II. DSI was responsible for investigating any Gifts deemed as hostile or nationalistic in nature. As gifts became more commonplace in the postwar period, DSI began accepting complaints about personal gifts sent by members of Congress and other government officials. By 1957, DSI had developed a program known as "Gift Investigation Regulation No." 3-2". As part of this regulation, members were required to report any suspicious or inappropriate gift transactions within thirty days after receipt. In 1960, it was decided that Gifts should not only be bestowed on individuals but also organizations such as schools and hospitals. Therefore, DSI promulgated "Gift Investigation Regulation No." 5-1" which defined an organization as "…a group made up exclusively or principally thereof consisting of civilians", instead of just "individuals". This change allowed for greater duplication and control over gift shipments by AFHQ generals and managers who could now choose which organizations they wished to honor with a gift package! A similar rule was introduced in 1972 with "Gift Investigation Regulation No." 6-1" which limited recipients to individuals within one state at a time and prohibited gratuities exceeding $50 per shipment! These regulations have remained in effect since their original promulgation! Today, AFB Gift History plays an important role in honoring the memory of our service members and families who have passed away while serving our country! Through our programs we are able to send unique packages containing items both old and new that represent each member's individualized strengths! Our programs provide opportunities for members everywhere to express love through gifting - something that truly touches everyone we reach across America!
