The Richmond Army National Guard was created in 1865 as a result of the California Gold Rush. The unit saw combat during the 1868-1872 Mexican American War and was disbanded in 1887. However, the unit was reactivated again in 1903 and served during World War I until it was disbanded in 1919. It then served as ancillary units for the California National Guard from 1923 to 1949. In 1951, the Richmond Army National Guard became an organized military force and began using its present name. The unit has since participated in various conflicts, most recently Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003-2004. Today, the Richmond Army National Guard remains one of America's largest army formations with more than 82,000 soldiers and airmen stationed across 26 states nationwide. The current definition of "city" began appearing on maps starting in 1958 when Interstate 80 was built through Contra Costa County; at that time all settlements east of Mendocino Street were considered part of Richmond proper (). In 1964–1965, Mayor Richard Riordan spearheaded what is now known as "the renaissance" for Richmond which focused attention on culture and restoration projects throughout downtown and along Jefferson Davis Highway/I-80 corridor which included renovating old fire stations among other tasks In 1990s much work took place in preparation for Super Bowl XXVIII where both teams played their home games at Black Rock Stadium; this event helped increase business activity downtown especially since many tourists knew about Super Bowls hereabouts
