Richmond, California is known as the Coffee Capital of the world. The city has been home to coffee roasters and cafes for over 100 years and today there are numerous unique coffee shops and restaurants that offer delicious cup of Joe. One of the earliest roasters in Richmond was the Dutch Coffee Company which opened its doors in 1892. The company produced a variety of coffee products including beans, ground coffee, iced tea, and hot chocolate. In 1915, Dutch Coffee merged with two other companies to form Roaring Springs Coffee Corporation. Roaring Springs became one of the largest coffee corporations in North America and operated over 350 stores across thirty-eight U.S. states before ceasing operations in 1979. At its peak, Roaring Springs had sales totaling $2 billion! During World War II, Richmond was home to several major caffeine production plants such as United States Rubber Works which manufactured rubber bullets and military cigarettes; Wacoal Paper Mills which processed paper for gasoline masks; and Kaiser Aluminum Works which developed aluminum alloys for ammunition production. After the war ended, these plants closed down and Richmond's caffeine industry went into decline. However, this does not mean that coffee wasn't enjoyed during this time – throughout the 1970s and 1980s many different cafes continued to serve delicious cups of Joe from their own storage or backrooms! In 1984, two friends who were entrepreneurs named Tim Asbury (founder of Starbucks) and Kevin Johnson decided to open up their first café in what is now called King's Cafe on James Street near Quaker Square. King's Cafeteria quickly became an icon within Richmond due to its stylish décor and delicious cup of Joe! Since then every other cafe within town has followed suit with their own franchisee-owned restaurant serving up fantastic java! Today King's Café is considered one of Richmond's most iconic properties along with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Casino!

In 1951, Mayor George Moscone named Chinatown Reservoir after Lieutenant Colonel Clarence Darrow who helped lead a nonviolent resistance campaign against Japanese occupation during World War II
