The first coffeehouse in Ridgecrest was called The Dutchman and it was opened by our founder, Samuel S. Hill, Sr. In 1896, The Wagon Wheel Coffee House was opened and served the town's first cup of Joe. In 1922, The Daily News newspaper began serving coffee from their offices in Ridgecrest and this continued until 1984 when the paper moved to Tucson. In 1986, The Java Joes opened on Market Street and continues to serve delicious java drinks today! In addition to its long coffee history, Ridgecrest also has a rich cultural heritage that includes art galleries, theaters and restaurants dating back to 1897-1964. Our culture is reflected in our wide variety of espresso drinks including lungers (a type of Italian espresso) and brainstorms (a brand of Belgian chocolate).
