Ridgecrest is part of the Sierra Madre del Norte metropolitan area. Ridgecrest is located in the eastern Mojave Desert and bordered by Yucca Valley to the north and east, Cedar Mesa to the south and west, and Antelope Valley to the northwest. It contains an oasis of stands of Joshua trees on its outskirts. The name Ridgecrest comes from "the ridges that rise abruptly from the desert floor", which are still visible today when traveling down Interstate 8 between Yucca Valley and Antelope Valley.
