Ridgecrest, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 9,803 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Ridgecrest has been given to nearby mountains and valleys as well. The first people to live in what is now Ridgecrest were the Mono people who arrived around 1770 from Northern Mexico. They built their initial home on a high mountain peak called Tejon Pass. In 1864, Mormon pioneers settled in what is now Ridgecrest and began farming Mission Valley which became known as "the Promised Land." The area remained primarily Mormon until after World War II when other groups moved into the valley including Muslims and Latinos. Ridgecrest was founded on December 25, 1909 by Jens Jensen with $5,000 from his father John Jensen and others who had also contributed money for a new post office near Redlands (now Riverside). The name of the post office was changed to Ridgecrest on January 1, 1910 due to its location at an important junction of trails leading to Big Bear Lake and Disneyland Resort (then called Anaheim). In 1934, Harry Bennett opened his first store in what is now the old Post Office Annex building which still stands today. That same year saw the opening of First Baptist Church in Ridgecrest which remains one of the most popular churches in town today. A major fire tore through parts of downtown Riverside on November 3rd 1985 leaving much damage but no loss of life. On July 15th 2009 it was announced that Google would be establishing its headquarters intown adjacent to First Baptist Church across from Interstate 5widening I-10 between US 26/I-805 eastbound and CA State Route 14 westbound making it possible for more people living close by without having to leave town or go out of state for work or shopping purposes etc.. Ridgecrest is a town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. Ridgecrest is located on the crest of Mount Whitney and overlooks Yosemite National Park. It became a incorporated town on March 12, 1914. The first settlers in Ridgecrest were two brothers who came from Upstate New York in 1859: Lewis and Clark Morrill. They built a log cabin on what is now known as the Hillside Drive near present-day Happy Valley Road. Mrs. Morrill raised chickens for eggs and cows for milk until her husband arrived with an ox team to take them over to their new home about 1 mile (1 km) east of the original cabin. A post office called Ridgecrest was established in 1862, but no mail reached it because there was no road connecting it to other settlements nearby. In 1875, George Hines platted what is today downtown Ridgecrest and named it after his friend General John Custer; however, Custer never visited or lived in Ridgecrest himself. Some believe that he may have been inspired by General Grant's visit to this region during his Overland Expedition which occurred during 1876-77 through the same area where Ridgecrest now stands In 1916 when ridgecrest incorporated as a town its first mayor was Hiram Sibley who later served as State Superintendent of Education
