Ridgecrest is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. Ridgecrest is located 120 miles (195 km) east of Los Angeles and 50 miles (80 km) west of San Diego. It lies on the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is bounded by Arroyo Seco to the south, Diamond Valley to the north, and Victorville to the east. The first European Americans to reach Ridgecrest were wagon train pioneers led by Captain George Cope in 1846. In 1853, General Tomahawk Jackson founded Stockton Springs Mission near present-day Peña Blanca Avenue and Utopia Street. In 1863, John Wesley Powell visited Ridgecrest while exploring Mono County for gold seekers. The town site was surveyed in 1865 by Jepsen & Nye from their survey of Bear Valley Ranchlands within today's Redwood City boundaries. In 1876–77, prospectors discovered natural gasbushing sites in what are now parts of Diamond Valley and Arroyo Seco Counties; these operations became known as Gasconade Canyon discoveries. By 1886 over 200 people were working at gasbushing concessions in Petco Park; this production stopped after 1906 because of oil discovery activity around Palm Springs.. In 1914 Hollywood began filming "The Grapes Of Wrath" there with John Wayne and his crew on location for three days before leaving for Arizona on August 17th that same year

The population grew rapidly during the early 20th century, and by 1920 there were more than 1,000 residents.During World War II, Ridgecrest played an important role as a military base. The town was home to four army airfields (Airey Field, North Base Camp; South Base Camp; Fort Bliss), and they used the facilities to produce fighter planes and otherplanes. After the war ended, Ridgecrest slowly lost its importance as a community until the arrival of Route 66 in the late 1960s. This highway brought new people and businesses into town, and they soon started rebuilding what had been destroyed by highway construction.Today, Ridgecrest is an attractive community with many unique features that make it an interesting place to live or visit. Its rich history makes it one of America's most significant communities from pre-contact times onward."
