The Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) recommended that Ridgecrest be closed in 1990, but it was saved by then-Mayor Dick Murphy who negotiated with BRAC. In 1993, Ridgecrest became home to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBAR), which replaced Fort Irwin as the primary US military installation in Southern California.

Some complaints about Ridgecrest include slow response times for ambulance service or firefighting efforts,[2] lack of parks and playgrounds,[3] and high rates for rents and home prices.[4]

Ridgecrest is one of twelve communities in San Diego County that are part of the South Bay Regional District. The community is located on both sides of Hwy 101 and has a total area of just over 4 square miles. The first people to live in Ridgecrest were Native Americans who hunted and gathered fruits and vegetables near the present-day site of downtown. In 1892, prospectors discovered gold veins in the hills around Ridgecrest, so many settlers started moving into the town from other parts of San Diego County soon after. By 1906, there were more than 100 residents living in Ridgecrest. The post office was established in 1907 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1960. During World War II, Ridgecrest became an important military supply depot for Southern California due to its strategic location at the mouth of Mission Valley between Imperial Beach and Coronado Island. More than 1 million soldiers were camped at or near Ridgecress during World War II; most notably General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters when he led his forces into Japan during Operation Downfall. In recent years, though many businesses have closed down or been sold, much progress has been made with rehabilitation efforts for some buildings which have seen extensive damage from hurricanes Harvey and Irma earlier this year as well as wildfires that scorched acres around town earlier this year (the fire destroyed several homes but did not cause any casualties). Some community members remain committed to making their small town feel like home by hosting events such as art walks throughout the week or Faygo nights out every Friday night for local artists who sell their work outside local grocery stores or bars - giving locals something to do besides sit around all day long!
