The history of the Army in Ripon, California began with a small group of men from the town in 1851. The first military detachment to arrive in the area was an outfit of farmers and their children who were assigned to garrison duty at Fort Sill on the Sacramento River. In 1862, Ripon was incorporated as a city, and its first mayor, A.J. Cooksey, served from 1865-1867. The city's growth led to increased need for military personnel and service members attended local schools until they could join the army or navy. In 1868, Ripon became home to one of America's first national Guard camps when General Order No. 1 authorized activation of a regiment consisting of citizens from twenty-five U.S. states under the command of Colonel Augustus Graybill (1814-1892). From 1870-1872, Major James Jarrell (1822-1900) commanded an artillery battalion which operated out of Camp Sill near present day Chamberlin Avenue and Humboldt Parkway Boulevard south of downtown Ripon. In 1875, General Order No. 9 established a militia battalion composed exclusively of civilians called the "Ripon Volunteers". The battalion fought in several engagements during that year's Mexican American War before being disbanded in 1876 due to lack participation by most residents located within its unit's boundaries In 1898 Congress passed legislation authorizing establishment of an Army Corps Of Engineers which would later become known as the Army Corps Of Engineers/California National Guard . As part as part these new organizations two battalions were formed from civilian soldiers - one company commanded by Captain John Cavanaugh (1798-1869) from Tecumseh Battalion #2 stationed at Moraga Arsenal; and another company commanded by Lieutenant George Stephenson (1793-1857) from Battalion #4 stationed at Red Bluff Arsenal Facility near today's Highway 101 Bridge crossing over Sacramento River just east of town center On September 16th 1907 three companies - Company I (Captain Charles Wintney), Company K (Lieutenant John Broughton), and Company L (Captain Alfred Estrada) -- arrived at Camp Goodwin Barracks located on what is now Eastern Avenue just north eastof Main Street in ripon . After weeks training maneuvers along with other units detailed for deployment into World War I it was announced that all male citizens between 18 years old and 50 years old must register with cavalry commander for induction into cavalry regiments not only for protection but also for access to education opportunities available through Military Service Training Center located inside what is now Geary High School across Eastern Ave

The Ripon Area Volunteer Fire Department was organized on January 2, 1892. The first fire was fought in a barn on the east side of town. volunteer firefighters from the surrounding towns helped to put out the first fires. In 1915, the department merged with the nearby Livermore Volunteer Fire Department and became known as the Livermore-Ripon Battalion #1 Volunteer Fire Company. On October 1, 1935, the battalion purchased its own equipment and changed its name to The Ripon Battalion #2 Volunteer Fire Company. On May 1, 1942, The Ripon Battalion #3 Volunteer Fire Company was established and adopted a green and gold color scheme which has been in use ever since.
Ripon, California is a small town in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in Ripon were French Canadians who came there in 1839 to work on the Siskiyou Trail. They built a log cabin and named it La Motte-sur-Ripon after Jean-Baptiste de la Motte, Sieur de La Salle, who had commanded one of the expeditions that explored what is now Yosemite National Park. In 1851, a group of Englishmen led by Captain John Cranch established a ranch called Rancho San Joaquin near present day Ripon. The English name for Ripon was likely chosen because it was about 12 miles (19 km) from where they first saw any Mission San Francisco buildings while on their way to establish their new rancho. In 1872, James Hutton organized an agricultural fair at Ripon and soon began selling grapes from his vineyard south of town. By 1886 he had developed a large winery which became known as Hutton Vineyards. In 1923 Hutton merged with other vineyards and producers to form wine producer First Amendment Wines & Spirits Incorporated (). At its peak production in 1954 First Amendment wines exported over $20 million worth of wine abroad (the company ceased operations in 1984). The community has experienced several dramatic changes since its inception - most notably during World War II when many residents took up arms against fascism; then following the war as various industries shut down; and finally through the post-war boom years when more people moved into the area and agriculture boomed but also social services dwindled due to budget cuts by local governments across Northern California during that time period

The original settlers consisted of seventy nine men and women, all converts from British Columbia (then Canada). By 1860 only five residents remained at Ripon: Isaac Capps (a doctor), his wife Sarah Jane Capps (a teacher), three children John Prentice Jr., Mary Elizabeth Prentice and Nancy Ann Higbee; and George Aiken (a blacksmith).
