Ripon is one of nine cities in San Bernardino County and it is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what would become Ripon were two families from Illinois who arrived in 1851. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Ripon and surrounding communities including Iverson, Arroyo Seco, Redlands and Jurupa Valley. In 1863, Ripon became a station on the Central Pacific Railroad's Eastern Division which connected with Sacramento and other eastern townships. In 1868 when California became a state, Ripon became its first incorporated town with a population of 30 people. In 1886, local resident Wm Hemsley built what would become known as "Hemsley's Store" on Main Street to serve as an early market for ripons (thin pieces of dried fruit). After years of growth by entrepreneurs such as Hemsley and his son-in-law Harry Smithwick (1865-1948), ripons rapidly replaced grapes as America's most popular sweet fruit during World War II due to their low cost and easy availability. A drive by visitors at nearby Helmand Canyon led to discovery of ripons growing wild near that location in 1945. Today’s apple orchards were developed around this same location about 60 miles east where wild apples used to be found before commercial agriculture took hold Since then much development has occurred within downtown Ripon; including new schools (including Ripon High School), businesses (including several restaurants/cafes/bars) and housing developments including both single family homes (e.g., strip malls) and multifamily buildings like apartments . This growth has caused some challenges for downtown businesses which have had to adapt their strategies or close while others continue to thrive despite competition
