Before the coffee industry was born in California, there were many waves of migrants who came to the area looking for jobs and new opportunities. One such group was a band of Italian immigrants who arrived in 1851. Soon after, they set up a farm called Gambero Coffee in Ripon. The first crop yielded about two hundred pounds of coffee per acre and buyers throughout Northern California bought it as a base commodity for their own roasts. The Italians initially named their farm “Gambero”after themselves; however, by 1861, they had changed it to Ripon Coffee because that is where they found their first plants. By 1870, Gambero had four houses and more than fifty employees. It was during this time that the company started exporting its beans all over the country including New York City and Philadelphia. In 1875, Gambero merged with another coffee company but continued producing quality coffee until 1901 when it went bankrupt due to Prohibition laws. After its closure, Gambero Coffee left an important mark on American history – it is considered one of the pioneer companies in America that introduced espresso machines into mainstream culture.

This led to increased interest in quality coffees around the world – which has led to numerous different types of coffees being cultivated and sold today.
