The town of Ripon was founded on the site in 1856, and later that year, Bickerton built the first post office in the area. The town continued to grow rapidly for several decades until it reached its peak during World War II when over 150 businesses operating in the town employed over 1,000 individuals. After the war ended, business declined as people moved away and manufacturing moved into other parts of California. However, sinceRIPON has stayed active as an agricultural center with many crops being grown such as almonds, tomatoes, potatoes and cotton.Today there are numerous cafes and restaurants located throughout downtown Ripon including The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (which is now part of Starbucks), La Caja Mexicana (a Mexican restaurant), Gambero's Pizza (owned by Aramark) and Café Americano (a Italian café).
Ripon is a small city located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. Ripon was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1846 and incorporated as a town on November 3, 1872. The name comes from the Spanish word "ripón" meaning "a piece of land". The area that would become Ripon was first inhabited by Mono people who hunted and gathered plants and animals near what is now the downtown core of Ripon. In 1836, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Fillmore and reported finding veins of gold throughout the surrounding region. One month later, John Sutter arrived in Colusa County with his team to mine the nearby creek forgold. By 1840, there were over 50 miners operating in and around Fillmore alone including James Gee who became one of California's wealthiest men thanks to his share in Sutter's new venture. Gee donated about $10,000 worth of gold nuggets to build an Episcopal church in Fillmore which still stands today as Ripon's only brick building dating from that time period In 1846 Mormon pioneer Lorenzo Snow set out from Nauvoo Illinois on foot for what he thought would be a new home when he came across what is now western Kern County on his way back east after proselytizing among the Klamath Indian tribe Some 10 miles (16 km) northeast of where he had started lay what would become Ripon when wagon trains carrying emigrants heading westward reached their final resting place at Stocktonarry Creek on October 12th

The name is derived from Spanish and Italian Ripona (meaning "riverbank"). The first permanent residents of what is now Ripon were the Ohlone people who lived along the Mad River in 1775-76. In 1821, Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico was founded on land that later became Ripon. In 1852, James Hutton built a fort within present-day Ripon to protect settlers west of Palm Springs from Baja California Mexican forces looking for gold and other resources. The town's first postmaster was John Sutter. In 1865, when America acquired section 12 of Rancho Cucamonga from Mexico for $5 million (the total amount paid for all Mexican land east ofLOS Angeles), it included small part of present-day Ripon including one acre (0.4 km²) of what would become its downtown square today known as Market Street or Main Street. That same year also saw the opening of Hutton's mill which processed wheat until it was replaced by a larger cotton mill in 1907. A new courthouse was completed in 1903 and named after Judge John Leland Frye who had presided over both sessions of Congress during President Theodore Roosevelt's first term as president. Hutton ran his mill until his death in 1922; then it passed into ownership by George Wirtz Sr., father of George Wirtz Jr., who donated it to UCLA which operates it today as an engineering research center with fourteen buildings on campus including one complete with an air conditioning unit capableof cooling up to 100 degrees F (38 degrees C). In 1954, two years after UCLA moved into its new Pauley Pavilion facility adjacent to Madison Square Garden on campus, Hutton's mill building housed administrative offices for that school as well as a small gymnasium/auditorium used by students before and during basketball games at Madison Square Garden...Until 1975 when that building fell victim to arson fire aftermath changes made at UCLA following Sproules' resignation as Athletic Director; thereafter much office space has been leased out or rented back through various university organizations like Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity & women’s soccer team having their meeting rooms located inside the old Hutton Mill Building’s walls!
