The first coffee beans were grown in Ripon and it is said that the town’s name is derived from the Spanish word “maga,” meaning “coffee estate.” Maga Coffee began as a small family-owned business in Ripon back in the 1920s. The coffee beans were roasted and sold by Josef Mengele, who ran a grocery store there. In 1935, Maga Coffee merged with another local business, Koffee Klatch, to become one of the world’s largest coffee businesses. Today, Maga Coffee continues to operate as one of America’s leading specialty coffee companies with over 100 locations worldwide.

Ripon, California is a town located in Humboldt County, California. The population was 598 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Eureka–Mountain View–Newhall Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was patented on November 21, 1851 by George W. Ripon and named for his brother-in-law, Samuel Ripon. The first post office was established at Ripon on May 10, 1852. A store and hotel were built there in 1853. In 1855, the government erected a sawmill at Ripon to produce lumber for local buildings and railroad construction. In 1860, five settlers from Ohio traveled to what is now Humboldt County in search of land to purchase from the Native Americans near Lassen Peak about north of present-day Eureka. They named their new settlement after George W RIPON – one of their number – who had helped them find it while living in Ohio preceding their trip eastward into the Shasta Mountains with his family (his older brother James also came). In 1915, Mrs. Alice Hepler donated land to build a high school which would serve as both a local community center and primary school for grades one through twelve years old; today it remains Ripon High School's only building aside from its original structure that still stands within the boundaries of Ripon limits
