Ripon is a town in the U.S. state of California. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. Ripon is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Sacramento and 16 miles (27 km) east of Fresno. The first permanent settlers in what is now Ripon wereMexican immigrants who arrived there in 1846. A post office was established in 1852, and by 1860, there were five stores and ten families living here. In 1868, a railroad was built to connect Sacramento with Madera County, but this did not result in increased trade or development; instead it created more competition for land and jobs within Ripon itself. In 1870, when a new county was formed from parts of Madera and Yuba counties, Ripon became one of its first townships; it had a population of just over 100 people that year. However,rapid growth continued as ranchers began to move into riparian country along the riverbanks—a process that accelerated following the discovery of oil reserves at Lodi in 1901. By 1910, riparians made up almost two-thirds of all daytime employment in Ripon; by 1940 they constituted almost all full-time workers within town limits alone During World War II, many men worked as soldiers on military bases around the world; during their leave they sometimes took short trips home to visit family members or attend local events such as dances or picnics which would take place near where they lived or worked.. Ripon, California was founded on January 16, 1853 by Americans John C. Fremont and George H.W. Smith as a town in the now-defunct Mojave Desert Territory of California. The name “Ripon” is derived from the Miwok word Rupa, meaning “hillock” or “ mound”. In 1875, Ripon became an incorporated city with a population of over 100 people. Thecity's first mayor was A.G. Sutter and its first recorder was Wm. Fenton Hewitt Jr.. In 1906, Ripon became part of the new City of Carson City when that city was created from parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties by governor Pio Pico during the statehood movement in 1911. The following year saw the completion of a major water project in downtown Ripon which included the construction of a system of aqueducts and reservoirs to provide water for municipal purposes and for irrigating agricultural land around the city limits
