The Soldiers would provide entertainment and charity for local citizens. One such soldier was Major General Julius Kronenberg who donated a library to Ripon in 1907. The library quickly became known as the Colonel Smith Library because of its donations by Colonel Augustus Smith, an American military officer who served with Kronenberg during World War I. In 1923, the University of California at Berkeley purchased the building that housed the Colonel Smith Library and moved their main campus to Ripon. UC Berkeley continued to make donations to the library until they closed it in 1991. The County of Marin leased space on behalf of the City of Ripon inside a Veterans Affairs hospital until 1993 when it was sold to General Motors Corporation for $2 million. GM then leased it back to the City of Ripon which continues to use it today as their community center. In 1997, General Motors Corporation donated a new wing to their old Veteran Affairs hospital called “The Wings” which included a gift shop, fitness room and an amphitheater used for events like wrestling matches and soccer games.
