Ripon is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,986 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Ripon was Tom Wagoner in 1847, who homesteaded on the east side of town. Wagoner and his family were one of the early pioneers to work in what would become Kern County. In 1861, he and his son John built a log cabin on present-day State Route 99 south of town to serve as a stagecoach stop for travelers between Los Angeles and Tulare townships. In 1881, Jepson Cottonwood sold 640 acres (248 ha) of land at Ripon Creek for $10 per acre to Jaspar Houghtaling and others from Sacramento. By 1886, Houghtaling had laid out two villages – Ripon East and Ripon West – on what are now north west corner of SR 99 (now US 395). Both villages were abandoned by 1907 when the San Joaquin Valley Railway tracks were extended into Kern County from Visalia through Bakersfield to Atascadero.. However, rapid growth around Ripon during that time helped support development there even though most people left during World War II when agriculture became more important due to high demand for food products shipped abroad by the war effort. In 1957– 1958 Charles Jarvis began construction of Interstate 880 which crossed over SR 99 just outside of town; this led to an increase in traffic through town which caused some streetcars/trucks/ autos running off road onto SR 99 causing much damage over time including several bridges destroyed or lost entirely over time In 1966–1967 Supervisor Don Kiefel designed a new village plan which included increased housing development with access roads near schools while still having open space available within it so that people could come and go as they pleased without fear of demolition or inconvenience . This zoning change opened up much more land for housing development since it allowed developers to build larger homes without breaking up smaller parcels adjacent to each other thus resulting in denser neighborhoods with easier access than before . That same year also saw the opening of Highway 98 which connected downtown with agricultural areas further north about 2 miles away
