Riverbank, California is a small city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 8,868 at the 2010 census. Riverbank is an agricultural area that is rich in natural resources including water and minerals. It has a large shopping center, several schools, and a few businesses. The city was founded in 1919 by farmers who moved from Santa Ana to what is now Riverbank because of the availability of water and land here. The name comes from the word "river" which refers to the nearby Owens Valley. The City of Riverbank was incorporated on December 1, 1919 with a population of just over 100 people. By 1937, it had grown to over 3,000 people due to its location next to two major rivers - the Kern and Mojave Rivers - as well as its close proximity to other farming communities such as Yuma and Palmdale. In 1951, Riverbank became part of San Bernardino County when it was separated from Yuma County. As part of this change in borders, many businesses within Riverbank closed or went out of business while others were restructured or relocated within San Bernardino County itself; however some remain today including Hooters Resort & Casino (originally known as Red Baron), Old Ironsides Restaurant & Lounge (formerly known as Joe's Pizza), Ladybug Liquor Store & Lounge (now known as CBGB's), and Frontier Airlines QuickTrophy Shop (now known as GAAZ Place). In recent years there have been efforts made by residents and local officials to revitalize the community through various means such as adding more public transportation options such as light rail or bus lines; expanding access for outdoor activities such as fishing or golfing; developing new housing developments; and creating partnerships with surrounding municipalities like Claremont/Lodi/Ontario which offer tax-exempt status for their citizens living within Riverbank boundaries. Today, Riverbank remains an important economic engine for both San Bernardino County and neighboring Claremont/Lodi/Ontario despite experiencing some decline during certain periods throughout its history: between 1990-2001 homicides increased by 50%, poverty decreased by 25% while unemployment increased by 10%. Despite these challenges though, Mayor Jeff Kriegman feels that they are “ahead”of schedule when compared to similar cities across America that have experienced worse times recently”(Kriegman). This indicates that even during difficult times there are ways for Riverside County residents and business owners alike to keep their hope alive thanks in part to local government initiatives
