In Riverbank, California, the coffee industry has been around for over 100 years. The village was founded in 1892 by John S. Eberhardt and his family. The first coffee crop was grown in 1894 and the first store opened in 1896. In 1907, the Eberhardts started a drip-roasting company and built their own roastery in 1909. In 1916, they sold their business to Harry Schneider of Sulphur Springs Coffee Company. In 1928, Harry Schneider merged with the Dutch-owned Pacific Coffee Corporation to form Philips American Coffee Corporation. Philip’s president was Abe Bechtel and its chairman was Julius Rosenwald. The early days of Philco were difficult because it competed against other large coffee companies such as General Foods (GFCO) and Jell-O (JELL). However, over timePhilco became one of the biggest coffee companies in America with a market share of 50% from 1938 until 1990 when it went bankrupt due to debtors’ claims totaling $2 billion dollars. After Philco’s bankruptcy, some of its assets were sold off including its plant at Riverside County Fairgrounds where UCLA is currently located (now known as Wexner Hall). In 1847, the Sacramento and Stockton Rivers met in what is now Riverbank. The area was originally a rancho (land grant) to José Maria Barrios, who named it after his river bank home of Banfield. In 1852, the government granted a deed to James Irvine for 6,000 acres of land on the east side of the rivers. TheIrvine Ranch became one of California's most important agricultural areas and produced crops such as cotton, hay, sugar beets, potatoes, wheat and beef. The first post office at Riverbank was established in 1854. In 1860, when California became a state, Riverbank became part of Alameda County. The population increased rapidly during the Gold Rush years and by 1870 there were over 1,500 people living in Riverbank. By 1880 the population had reached 4,000 people and by 1890 it had grown to 10,000 people. During this timeRiverbank experienced dramatic growth including an influx of immigrants from Hungary and Russia. During World War II many businesses came into being thanks to advances in war production techniques such as synthetic rubber production which allowed for more efficient transportation difficult resources like oil could be used more efficiently than ever before. Many industries such as munitions manufacture moved their operations out of California during wartime because they were too expensive or unsafe to remain in the Golden State following Pearl Harbor; however some companies did stay behind including Eastman Kodak which built its first photographic camera factory outside of America in 1945 inside what is now Kaiser Permanente Medical Center near Soquel Drive on San Bruno Peninsula
At the time of its founding in 1849, Riverbank was a small settlement on the San Joaquin River near Modesto. The name derived from an old Indian word meaning "place where the water flows freely." As the town grew and prospered, it became known for its agricultural production, as well as its many religious and educational institutions. In 1907, Riverbank merged with other towns in Ceres County to form the city of Modesto.
