In 1847, two brothers named George and Solomon Smith purchased land on what is now Riverbend Drive in order to start a lumber business. By 1850, both George and Solomon had died, leaving their company to their sons John and James Smith.Over time,John and James Smith developed other aspects of their business including selling goods related to fishing, farming, and construction; however they remain considered pioneers in this field. By 1870, JohnSmith had died; his son James continued running their company until it merged with another firm in 1915.
