Riverbank is a small town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Oakland and east of San Leandro. The name comes from the navigable portion of the River Delta which runs through it. The first European to visit Riverbank was José Gabriel Bodega y Polanco on August 12, 1769, when he explored what is now Hayward. In 1868–1869 Jepson made an unsuccessful attempt to find a route to China by sailing down the river from here. A wharf and landing were built at this location in 1875 by John Denny and named after his friend General James Keedy (1817-1876). Captain George Wright also landed there in 1875; his ship "Natchez" had been wrecked near Stockton two years earlier while attempting a voyage up the Sacramento Valley from Monterey Bay. A post office called Riverbank was established in 1878, but no mail arrived until 1880. The town site was patented to Will Rogers on November 16, 1880. He donated it for use as a Dragoon Cemetery on October 10th of that year . It may have been founded because Colonel John Sutter's Ranch lay just outside of town limits and he needed burial space for his horses. In 1907 an electric railway ran through town between Oakland and San Leandro making it possible for people to get around without driving or riding bicycles; this led to an increase in traffic and parking problems so City Council passed ordinances prohibiting parking beyond 6 pm during weekdays and 4 pm on Saturday nights (now Standard hours). In 1910 developer Charles Waddell began construction of what would become Safeway supermarkets next door to Arden Oaks High School; these developments increased business opportunities for Riverbank merchants who became known as "Wrightaires". One result was that many old buildings were torn down or replaced with new structures during Waddell's tenure because they were needed for store scale development not related to retail services or agricultural production (the only other major industry then existing within city limits). In 1957 Safeway closed its original location next door; however, due largely to local activism over racism within Safeway - including sit-ins - their successor company Walmart built its first store in Riverbank alone some years later
