It was later renamed by British soldiers during the Mexican-American War as Fort Point at Monterey because of its strategic location on the Monterey Peninsula. The town gradually grew around the military fort and surrounding ranchos until it reached its current size in 1887 when it was annexed by Pasadena. In 1913, a new bridge was built across the Santa Cruz River and Riverbank became an incorporated city. In 1933, when Valley Village was established nearby, Riverbank annexed that community as well. Today both towns share a common history and culture. Riverbank is known for its excellent wine production and has become one of the most popular winegrowing areas in California. The soils here are especially good for red wines but can also produce whites or sparkling wines. Wines made from riverbanks include Bear Creek Shiraz (a dry red), Fort Point Cabernet Sauvignon (a deep-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon), Willowbrook Syrah (a medium bodied Shiraz with lots oftwining flavor), and Pinecrest Riesling (a sweet white wine).

The location was first settled by Native Americans in the area that includes present-day Riverbank and its environs. The first Europeans to visit this part of California were Portuguese traders who traveled upriver from Mexico in 1542.
