It was initially located at what is now the Don Edwards Park, and produced firearms such as rifles, pistols and shotguns. In 1944, it became part of the United States Military Forces Reserve Command and produced munitions for World War II service. The armory closed in 1978 but reopened in 1984 as a civilian store. It was later sold to a company that used it as an ammunition warehouse until it closed in 2014.
Riverbank is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Delano-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. Riverbank is bordered by Kern County on the east, Delano County on the north, and Mono County on the west. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish missionaries in 1769 and they named it San Francisco de la Ribera. In 1821, gold was discovered in nearby Kerns and Riverbank became part of that gold rush. The town rapidly grew due to its natural resources and began to be called "the Jewel of Kern". By 1872, Riverbank had a post office, hotel and two stores. In 1891 it had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,500 people. In 1907–08 a $10 million bond issue was passed by voters to build new schools and other public works in Riverbank including a new water system as well as new streets and bridges. At the time these measures were considered ambitious for much of southern California because no one had ever tried such an undertaking before The bonds were paid for through what became known as "the greenback" or paper money which circulated like cash but could only be used for goods purchased with silver coins or U.S.$1 notes

Riverbank, California is a small town in Inyo County, California. It was platted on November 3, 1887 by citizens of the nearby community of Mono and became a post office on February 22, 1888. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. The name Riverbank comes from the Chumash word "riverbank," meaning "a stream that flows along a ridge or bank." The town site lay at an elevation of above sea level when it was platted and its first business was to sell goods brought down the San Joaquin River by miners. By 1893, when the railroad arrived and started carrying passengers and cargo through town, there were nine stores and two hotels in operation. Business grew rapidly until World War I stopped traffic; then growth slowed as agriculture took over. However, during the late 1920s-early 1930s rapid growth resumed with new housing developments being built near downtown. In 1978, Riverbank voters passed a proposition to rename thetown after world war II veteran Admiral Chester Nimitz (1901-1986). The measure passed with nearly 60 percent approval rate among those who voted. Nimitz died in 1986 before he could be honored with a street name change
