Riverbank is a census-designated place located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 5,865 at the 2010 census. Riverbank is bounded by the San Joaquin Valley to the north, Livermore Valley to the east, and Walnut Creek to the south. The name "Riverbank" was given to the site by Spanish missionaries in 1821 when they named it Rancho de las Pulgas (Land of Rattlesnakes). In 1868, George Hearst donated 640 acres (2 km²) of land on which he built Hearst Ranch. The town of Riverbank was founded on December 12, 1870 by James Gifford and others as a temporary settlement near where Hearst's ranch would be built. The first post office opened in 1871. In 1886, John Muir listed 117 properties within Riverbank limits on his map of Pacific Northwest America. These included Muir's cabin and farmhouse at present-day Bear Cave Road and Hwy 101 Alternate #1 south of Interstate 680; his millrace property downstream from present day Waverly Drive; and other holdings including Big Spring Creek (), Baldy Meadow (), Little Spring Creek (), Pigeon Ridge () and Cabbage Patch (). In 1906, after years of planning by local officials including bankers J.P. Morgan and Eugene Debs, a system for distributing water supplies through underground pipelines was approved that involved building two reservoirs at what is now North Park Boulevard/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard in Riverbank along with an associated distribution center beneath North Park Boulevard just east of Highway 101 Alternate #1 between Walnut Creek Rd./Alameda Ave., Menlo Park Blvd./Milpitas Blvd., Fremont Rd./East Palo Alto Rd., El Sobrante Ave./Mountain View Rd., Crockett Cove () and Signal Hill () . Construction began on this project in 1907 but it quickly slowed due to lack of funding before finally terminating in 1916 with only part completed The final section under Highway 101 Alternate #1 were completed in 1917 but never used because World War I interrupted development again . The main channelized supply available today forms much of what became riverbanks area with several small creeks crossing its course mostly duringEl Sobrante Canyon floods which occur every few years or so
In 1849, the American Fur Company established a fur trading post on the banks of the Riverbank in what is now Riverside County. The post was located about three miles downstream from modern-day downtown Riverside. The American Fur Company continued to operate its Post at Riverbank until 1861 when it merged with other companies to form the United States Fur Company. In 1886, the company merged with another fur company, James Fenton's Missouri Furriers, to form Fenton and Hutton Furriers. In 1915, Fenton and Huttonfurriers merged with Remington Arms Co., making it one of the largest firearms manufacturers in America. In 1932, Remington merged with Casull Inc., forming Casull Firearms Corporation. Today, Riverbank is a center for Antique Firearms hobbyists and any number of small businesses that sell various items related to gun history and culture.
