The Navy has a long and proud history in Riverbank, California. The first Naval ship to call at the city was USS Constitution on December 15, 1846. The City of Riverbank welcomed America’s first naval ship with open arms, and she remains a symbol of civic pride to this day. The USS Constitution served as the flagship of the San Francisco Volunteer Fire Department from 1847-1851. In 1850, she became the flagship of Commodore George Dewey’s Pacific Squadron during his Expedition against Japan. She toured Europe between 1852-1854 before returning to San Francisco in October of that year and becoming permanent home port for the volunteer fire department. On February 6th, 1861 USS Constitution sailed into town for her maiden voyage as part of Captain David Dixon Porter’s 1st Fleet East coast Blockading Squadron which was responsible for harassing Confederate vessels off the California coast. On March 4th, 1861 Commodore Porter put his squadron into action when he sighted an enemy ship bearing down on him from astern and ordered his men to fire upon it without mercy! Unfortunately for Commodore Porter, this particular engagement ended in a fiasco with no casualties on either side; however it demonstrated how important it was for ships belonging to fleet expeditions to stay close together while patrolling waters near shore! In 1865 USS Constitution underwent repairs at Wilmington, North Carolina after hitting a rock while sailing through rough waters off Northern California. She returned fully operational on May 16th by way of Panama Canal but stopped at Vera Cruz due to an outbreak of yellow fever aboard her crew who were later diagnosed with cholera there also (the disease caused great losses among sailors). After spending two weeks moored there she continued upriver until reaching Monterey Bay where she arrived on November 8th blockade running again under Captain Porter Ateeq Bannister commanding HMS Dauntless which had recently joined Admiral Dewey’s squadron! USS Constitution decommissioned in 1923 and been stored at Mare Island Naval Shipyard until being sold by Congress in 1945 as surplus property. On July 20th 1946 she passed through Pier 2 in Redwood City CA bound for Halifax Nova Scotia where she arrived on September 10th having cost $560,000! Finally placed into service as HMCS Simcoe under command of Commander C F Ladd MPC her new homeport until retired in 1960 #8 footported bow underway LCDR John W Disher USN

Riverbank is a small town in Kern County, California. It was established in 1887 as the town of Isabella. The name was changed to Riverbank in 1903, and to its current form in 1907. In 1915, Riverbank became the site of a major air-raiding operation by the United States Army during World War I. The town has a population of about 350 residents today and is located on the banks of the Kern River. The community is also home to two colleges: Valley Forge University and Santa Clara University.
The Riverbank neighborhood in east San Francisco is the location of a number of significant events and people in its history. The first known settlers in the area were Native Americans, who lived near the river for many years before moving to what is now Oakland. In 1851, two men, James Irvine and John Fenton, founded Irvine Rancho on land that now sits at the eastern edge of Riverbank. The ranch was used as a grazing ground for horses, cows, and other livestock until it was purchased by George Hearst in 1907. At Hearst's behest, much of the original ranch was developed into one of San Francisco's most prestigious neighborhoods. Over time, various businesses have moved out or been acquired by other companies and residents have changed significantly over this period. One important development around this time was the construction of Market Street (now Harrison street) which ran from Beale Street past Interstate 680 to Powell/Potrero Hill. This thoroughfare helped spur economic development along both sides of Market Street and helped make Riverbank one of San Francisco's most affluent areas during its early years. Additionally, several notable churches were built within walking distance of each other on Harrison Street during this time- including Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church (now Cathedral Basilica), St Philip Neri Catholic Church (now Golden Gate Park District Library), and Holy Cross Catholic Church (later United Methodist). Today portions of these churches are still functioning although their addresses have changed; for example Holy Cross' current address is 1411 Harrison St., while Our Lady Of Mount Carmel's current address is 1280 Mission St.. Once again developers came to town during World War II with memberships in Coast Guard Auxiliary organizations providing them with access to housing and resources necessary for wartime production. Many notable buildings were erected here- including USS Mare Island Naval Shipyard at 777 Jefferson Ave., Navy Group Building at 8th & Mission Streets NW., Ferry Building at 4th & Turk Streets NW., Redevelopment Authority Building at 555 Bush Ave., California State University - Northridge Campus at 5555 Peralta Rd., Kaiser Permanente Clinic - 415 Terry Ave., Coyote Peak Regional Nuclear Generating Station - 6200 Coyote Peak Rd.. today these structures remain standing but their addresses have changed: USS Mare Island Naval Shipyard became Coyote Peak Regional Nuclear Generating Station #2 9700 N Pearl St #1; Navy Group Building became Kaiser Permanente Clinic - 415 Terry Ave.; Ferry Building became Kaiser Permanente Clinic - 6200 Coyote Peak Rd.; Redevelopment AuthorityBuilding became Kaiser Permanente Clinic - 555 Bush Ave.;California State University - Northridge CampusBecame Coyote Peak Regional Nuclear Generating Station #3 6000 El Camino Real NE
