Riverbank is a small town on the west bank of the Sacramento River in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census. It lies about 8 miles (13 km) north of downtown Sacramento and about 6 miles (10 km) south of Menlo Park. The name "Riverbank" is derived from the confluence of two rivers, the Rutter and American Rivers. The first European to visit what is now Riverbank was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1769. He named it Ciudad San Francisco because he thought it would be an attractive trading post for goods coming overland from Mexico City. A post office called Riverbank was established in 1846, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1872, James Irvine opened a store at 5th Street and Elm Avenue which became known as Irvine's General Store. At that time, it was one of only four general stores in Contra Costa County with a formal business establishment such as a storekeeper, clerk, or bookkeeper. The other three were Beaumontville (now part of Walnut Creek), Hercules (now part of Daly City), and Pleasanton. One local legend tells how John Fonda came to Riverbank in his old Ford pickup truck during the 1970s movie "The Godfather". When asked where he was going by some locals on Highway 101 near Interstate 80, Fonda replied "I'm going to see my girl." This story has been perpetuated as an advertising campaign slogan for Chevron Oil Company's gas station located across I-80 from where "The Godfather" took place; however this story is apocryphal and there is no evidence that John Fonda ever visited Riverbank specifically for that purpose. In early 1980s when then Mayor Whitehurst decided that Contra Costa County should have its own airport - even though others within the county wanted Alameda County to become its new airport - he worked tirelessly to get funding for what would eventually be renamed Valley Airport near Dublin/Heathfield BART Station; but ultimately opposition from then-Governoreland prevented Valley Airport from being built., leaving Contra Costa County with only"? Oakland International Airport? As Valley Airport struggled financially throughout the 1990s and 2000s various proposals were made to re-name it ?Riverside? or ?San Pablo? however no decisions were ever made & finally ?Valley? received official designation on February 14th 2005 after many years of discussion following laodicean naming schemes proposed by Area Development Inc.?

Riverbank is a small town in Northern California, located on the border of San Bernardino County and Riverside County. The population was 7,191 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Riverbank were pioneers who founded the town in 1859. They were farmers and traders who ventured into what is now known as Riverside County for agriculture and trade purposes. By 1862, Riverbank had a post office and 2 stores. In 1865, the railroad was built through Riverbank and it started to grow quickly from its beginnings as a rural community to one with businesses, schools, churches and other services. In 1872, a school was built in Riverbank which served local children until 1931 when it was replaced by Riverbank Elementary School which still operates today. A movie theater opened in 1955 called the Actors Studio Movie House which closed in 1976 after many years of use. In 1984, an amusement park called Six Flags Over Riverside opened which remains open today though it has been renovated several times including most recently in 2013 when it reopened under new management as Adventure World USA Riverbank also experienced some significant growth during World War II with the development of munitions production plants such as cement works at nearby Redlands and lead smelting operations at Eastvale Today, riverbanks continue to be an important focus for economic development with several restaurants, banks and businesses located within walking distance of each other making it easy to get around town while providing basic needs like grocery store stocked shelves or pharmacies close by should something go wrong with your medications
